The Oosterhaven Bridge on the Europaweg in Groningen will be closed from Monday 6 July, 7:00 a.m. until Friday 17 July, 6:00 p.m. due to essential maintenance carried out by the Municipality of Groningen. The work will take place in two phases, resulting in different traffic restrictions.
During the first phase of the maintenance, the bridge must remain fully open. As a result, the bridge will be closed to all traffic from Monday 6 July through Friday 10 July. This also affects buses and emergency services, which will follow alternative routes.
To ensure emergency services can continue to reach the UMCG and Groningen city centre safely, the nearby Berlage Bridge will be closed to regular car traffic during this period. Cyclists, buses and emergency services will still be able to use this bridge.
All other motor traffic will be diverted via the Southern Ring Road (N7) and Eastern Ring Road (N46). Drivers heading towards the city centre can use the Rijksweg (exit 2) and Damsterdiep. Traffic leaving the city can also reach the ring road via Damsterdiep and Rijksweg.
From 11 July, the Berlage Bridge will reopen to local traffic. However, motorists are still advised to use the ring roads wherever possible, as these roads are better equipped to handle the additional traffic.
During this period, the Oosterhaven Bridge will remain closed to cars and cyclists. Buses and emergency services will be allowed to use the bridge.
Cyclists and pedestrians will not be able to use the Oosterhaven Bridge throughout the two-week closure. They will be diverted via the Berlage Bridge (located east of the Oosterhaven Bridge on Eltjo Ruggeweg). Alternatively, they can use the Tromp Bridge or the Ooster Bridge.
From 6 to 10 July, buses will operate on a different route because they cannot use the Oosterhaven Bridge. They will be diverted via the Berlage Bridge, where a temporary bus stop will be in operation.
The following bus routes are affected:
2 Zuidhorn – Reitdiep – Zernike – UMCG – Europapark
5 Annen – Haren – P+R Meerstad – Tersluis/Harkstede
76 Groningen – Hoogezand
171 Veendam – Groningen
178 Appingedam – Groningen
