At OPUS Cactus®, everything revolves around pioneering with an unexpected hero: the Opuntia cactus. The startup utilizes dry, infertile areas in South Africa to cultivate the cactus, which forms the basis for food, animal feed, and bio-energy solutions. The company fosters curiosity, creativity, and technology.
"At first, I thought I needed to move to the Randstad for an interesting job, but on campus, I found exactly what I was looking for: a place where I could learn, make mistakes, and contribute," says Elisa Klunder.
At DNV, it's about more than just laboratory work. Marloes explains, "We provide analysis services for gaseous energy carriers, such as hydrogen, synthetic gases, and biogas. Our projects are diverse and go beyond just analysis services. We offer opportunities for people with both technical and non-technical backgrounds. Interns and graduates often move on to a job here."
“Proteins are so complex – that’s what makes our work exciting,” says Andrea Boonstra, scientist at the young and fast-growing company Portal Biotech on Campus Groningen. Together with her fellow scientist Lennard de Boer, Andrea shares how they found their way to this innovative company and what drives them in their work.
Remco Stam, product designer at SE Factory, remembers his first days at the company well: "It all started with a graduation assignment from my Industrial Product Design course at the Hanze. I made a redesign of one of SE Factory's products, because the company wanted to see what options were available to update the components of their EMDR Kit.
From an introverted student to a fully qualified nurse: HBO Nursing student Daniël Arents is very enthusiastic about the professional and personal growth he is experiencing during his studies and internships at the UMCG. In the 'Boeien en Binden' program, a collaboration between UMCG and Hanze where learning and working are combined, he finds all the challenges he is looking for.
'After my first cup of coffee and a tour, I knew right away: this is it.' Daniël Vaas quickly made up his mind after his initial introduction to Ofichem: he had found his place. After completing his Chemistry studies at the Hanze University on Campus Groningen, he began searching for a job in organic chemistry. A LinkedIn post connected him with Weite Oldenziel's company. 'We are looking for ambitious people, like Daniël. Young individuals fresh out of their education on Campus Groningen, but also those further along in their careers, truly have good career prospects here.'
How do you find a good internship or a cool first job? Muriël Meijer, intern at the medtech startup Implican on Healthy Ageing Campus Groningen, has a clear message: 'Dare to ask!' Speaking from experience, because she and Eliane Masih, both master's students in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Twente, approached Implican themselves from Enschede. Eliane got in touch with Implican through her internship coordinator: 'I immediately clicked in my first conversation with Ivo.'
Doing work that can positively change the lives of patients is incredibly motivating. "I can make a significant contribution here at InnoCore to the development of medicines. And I really have an impact on the lives of patients, and I'm proud of that," says Emma Niemeijer, who has been working in quality control at InnoCore Pharmaceuticals for a year and a half. She feels completely at home at InnoCore.
At the UMCG, patient care naturally takes precedence. However, behind the scenes, various professionals play a vital role in ensuring the hospital's smooth functioning on the Healthy Ageing Campus. One such individual is Linda Reinders, a communications officer for construction projects at the UMCG. Together with Carin Pier, coordinator of communications for construction projects, she manages the communication for all ongoing and upcoming construction projects spanning the next 15 years at UMCG. Linda says, 'We are working on shaping the UMCG of the future. This perspective makes our work highly interesting and meaningful.'
Making an impact in neonatal care through programming work while continuing to study – Computing Science student Jasper Trooster does just that. At Neolook, he applies the knowledge he's acquired at the University of Groningen (UG) to develop solutions that contribute to optimizing care for the tiniest patients. "I'm already working on real issues in the field."
