The Groningen-based startups IMChip, founded by Prof. Dr. Tamalika Banerjee of the University of Groningen, and MimeCure, led by Prof. Dr. Erik Frijlink and Dr. Luke van der Koog, have made it into the top 10 of the national Academic Startup Competition. This recognition places them among the most promising academic startups in the Netherlands. This spring, members of both startups will join a trade mission to Silicon Valley with ScaleNL.

IMChip ontwikkelt energiezuinige computerchips voor de chipindustrie om AI op een duurzame manier te versnellen. De startup werkt met de gepatenteerde memristor technologie die komt uit het lab van prof. Banerjee, om zo chips te ontwikkelen voor toepassingen als zelfrijdende auto’s, waar de elektronica zeer efficiënt AI taken moet uitvoeren met zo min mogelijk vertraging. Het bedrijf dat in najaar 2024 is opgericht bevindt zich nog in een vroeg stadium van productontwikkeling en is bezig investeerders aan te trekken.
MimeCure werkt aan een innovatieve therapie voor COPD die tot doel heeft beschadigd longweefsel te herstellen met behulp van een natuurlijk voorkomend eiwitfragment (MC002). Deze regeneratieve aanpak biedt nieuwe hoop voor miljoenen patiënten door de onderliggende oorzaak van de ziekte aan te pakken. De start-up is momenteel vooral gericht op het afronden van preklinisch onderzoek en het zoeken naar investeringen voor de eerste klinische testen bij mensen. Die zullen naar verwachting binnen drie tot vijf jaar starten, en wanneer ze succesvol zijn zouden deze behandeling binnen zeven tot tien jaar beschikbaar kunnen komen voor COPD patiënten.
De Academische Startup Competitie is een initiatief van het Ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat, Techleap, Nederlandse Universiteiten en de NFU. Dit jaar hebben zeven startups van het UG en het UMCG (waarvan vier FSE-startups) de top 40 gehaald.

Who is developing the most impactful innovation in Life Sciences & Health in the Northern Netherlands? Five companies are in the running for the LIFE Science Innovation Award 2026: Flux Robotics, Limosa Immunodiagnostics, SPCTR, MimeCure and GlycanScan International. The nominees will present their innovations on Tuesday 22 September during the fifth edition of the LIFE Science Conference in Groningen. An independent jury will select the winner, who will receive a €10,000 cash prize.
A much-loved tradition The Campus Trail has become a much-loved tradition on campus. Students, employees and professionals from companies and organisations across the campus ecosystem lace up their running shoes for a sporty 6.4-kilometre route through buildings and past some of the campus’s unique labs. The rapid growth in registrations shows just how much the Campus Trail has become part of the campus community. The combination of sport, meeting others and the unique campus setting makes the run a great opportunity to connect with people outside the usual work and study environment. And there’s no need to head home as soon as you cross the finish line. During the after-party, hosted by Contini Catering, participants can relax together, enjoy a drink and celebrate the afternoon. ZonMw is expected to open the final call for proposals within the PharmaNL Shared Development Infrastructure (SDI) program line. This program line focuses on strengthening the infrastructure for the development, upscaling, and production of innovative medicines in the Netherlands.
