Zernike Advanced Processing (ZAP)

The Zernike Advanced Processing (ZAP) facility is a semi-industrial environment where knowledge institutions and the business community work together on innovative solutions for the biobased economy. Entrepreneurs can come to ZAP with research questions, and we are happy to draw on their experience to bring new biobased products to market or make (chemical) processes more sustainable. In this way, ZAP contributes to building a robust region and a stronger international position.

Biomass

ZAP works with biomass residues. Examples of biomass include sugar beet, potatoes, grass, pruning waste, lupine, hemp and more. Biomass is used to generate energy through combustion. A disadvantage of this is that biomass does not yield enough energy. Research at ZAP focuses on adding value to biomass. In other words, which application yields the most from the components of biomass. Raw materials from biomass are processed into materials or used in the pharmaceutical industry, cosmetics, nutraceuticals and the clothing industry. A good regional example is adding value to shrimp shells.

Innovative learning and working environment

Three educational/knowledge institutions have joined forces with the business community to set up this unique facility: Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen, Noorderpoort College and the University of Groningen. ZAP combines education, research and demonstration opportunities.
