Ecofalt, a sustainable alternative to regular asphalt, was laid on De Mudden road at Zernike Campus in 2019. Ecofalt contains a plant-based binding agent. It is produced and processed cold, which means that CO2 emissions are lower than with regular asphalt. In addition, the base and intermediate layers consist of no less than 90% recycled demolition waste. This is the first time that ecofalt has been used for asphalting in the municipality of Groningen.
Ecofalt was developed by the start-up of the same name, Ecofalt, from the 2018 edition of the BeStart programme in Friesland. BeStart is an accelerator for cleantech start-ups. It proved impossible to find a launching customer in Friesland. However, Campus Groningen succeeded in conducting a pilot in collaboration with Enablemi and the municipality of Groningen.
